Athens, Rio de Janeiro, Beijing, are burdened with dilapidated behemoths; former Olympic or World Cup stadia demanding maintenance, and taking up space which could be employed for affordable accommodation and communal urban amenities. The competition asked participants to combine the two programs, stadium and housing. We saw however an inherent contradiction in the brief: we were asked to bequeath the scale and infrastructural inflexibility of a stadium, to housing, by merging these two. Instead, we proposed to dissolve the stadium – housing can organically follow, as needed, without being tied to a massive centralized project.
